Highly diverse and rapidly spreading: Melanagromyza sojae threatens the soybean belt of South America

چکیده
The soybean stem fly, Melanagromyza sojae, an Asian native insect, has successfully established in Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay and Bolivia. These countries are among the lead global producing nations, being collectively known as belt of South America. Infestation levels M. sojae grow by year, facilitated lack efficient management strategies. Previous studies have revealed a high number maternal lineages populations from Southern Brazil Paraguay, but comprehensive survey on genetic diversity combining samples all within American remains absent. We used mitochondrial DNA cytochrome oxidase I partial gene (mtCOI) to characterize specimens collected fourteen Brazilian sites one Argentine site, then combined our mtCOI data with previously published Australia, Bolivia, other sites, investigate this invasive agricultural pest species. Based molecular characterisation gene, haplotypes Msoj-COI-01 Msoj-COI-02 highest frequencies continent. found is evidence introductions involving multiple female founders into continent, proportion unique mtDNA identified Bolivia (~ 50%) suggests potential novel taken place. findings study will contribute better understanding America, supporting development strategies for highly assisting biosecurity preparedness emerging Agromyzidae flies economic importance.

First record of soybean stem fly Melanagromyza sojae (Diptera: Agromyzidae) in Paraguay confirmed by molecular evidence.
We provided the first scientific record of Melanagromyza sojae (Zehntner, 1900), through molecular characterization of partial mtDNA COI gene, that confirms the occurrence of this pest in Paraguay. Previously reported in Brazil, an outbreak of larvae of M. sojae known as the soybean stem fly (SSF) that belongs to the family Agromyzidae, was also noted in soybean fields from the Canindeyú, Alto ...
متن کاملSoybean Stem Fly, Melanagromyza sojae (Diptera: Agromyzidae), in the New World: detection of high genetic diversity from soybean fields in Brazil.
Soybean Stem Fly (SSF), Melanagromyza sojae (Zehntner), belongs to the family Agromyzidae and is highly polyphagous, attacking many plant species of the family Fabaceae, including soybean and other beans. SSF is regarded as one of the most important pests in soybean fields of Asia (e.g., China, India), North East Africa (e.g., Egypt), parts of Russia, and South East Asia. Despite reports of Agr...
متن کاملAgricultural impacts of glyphosate-resistant soybean cultivation in South America.
In the 2009/2010 growing season, Brazil was the second largest world soybean producer, followed by Argentina. Glyphosate-resistant soybeans (GRS) are being cultivated in most of the soybean area in South America. Overall, the GRS system is beneficial to the environment when compared to conventional soybean. GRS resulted in a significant shift toward no-tillage practices in Brazil and Argentina,...
